Opportunities for artists at Bag Factory: applications open for residency (women) and studio space

The Bag Factory is looking for young emerging artists to apply to the Visiting Artist Residency Programme

The programme, sponsored by studio artist Benon Lutaaya will offer an emerging female artist working in the field of drawing, painting, printmaking, collage or sculpture a 5 month residency at the Bag Factory.

The residency will offer the selected artist an opportunity to interact with local artists, develop and grow their creative practice, to expand their network internationally and to experience a climate of cultural diversity.

Application requirements:
* Applicants must be female
* between 2 and 4 years practicing as an artist
* must work in the medium of either drawing, painting, printmaking and/or sculpture.
* applicants must be South African.

Visiting artists are expected to:
* work from the Bag Factory, interacting with Bag Factory and local artists, and experiencing the city,
* complete a written report on their visit,
* donate a work to the Bag Factory,
* arrive on time and stay for the full period (five months),

What will a successful applicant receive?
* A 5 month residency at the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios including a material stipend and accomodation if the winner is from outside Johannesburg
* Solo show with Lizamore & Associates Gallery at the end of at the residency
* A return flight ticket to France for a 10 week international residency with SAFFCA in 2018, including R45,000 stipend while on residency in France
* Turbine Art Fair group show together with the 2 runners-up

This applicant must be able to participate in the full programme starting on 01 July and ending on 30 November 2017.

Applicants should not expect to profit financially from their stay at the Bag Factory, as this is cultural development programme.

The Bag Factory has ONE studio available for rent. We are looking for a mid-career artist to join our studio community.

The Bag Factory is a professional studio space, located in the Fordsburg area. We have been operating for more than 25 years and have a stable community of artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. The studio space and its community strives for an open, non-hierarchical creative environment that promotes exchange and experimentation. We are looking for one artist to take up a studio on a permanent basis.

What does the artist receive?
– A studio that is approximately 15m², with 2 wooden walls suitable for hanging
– An electricity point is provided for standard use. (kiln’s, air conditioners, and other high voltage devices need to be discussed with the office.)
– Wireless internet access
– Basic security
– Become part of the Bag Factory community
– Marketing through the Bag Factory and its events

Who is eligible?
The artist must be:
▪ a full-time practicing visual artist who is capable of regularly using a studio in their visual arts practice.
▪ An artist with a willingness to be involved in the Bag Factory’s projects and events
▪ attend all artists meetings.

Studio Cost:
Our studio spaces are subsidised and are rented on a tier system, subject to the stage of the artists’ career as well as what the artist can afford.
The two tier options are:
* Tier Two: This is aimed at emerging – mid-career artists and costs R2310 p/m (for which artists are required to give back 27 hours of working time to the organisation per year)
* Tier Three: Aimed at mid-career – established artists and costs R2750.

Artists must choose on their ability to pay rent and commitment to give back time

How are the applications assessed?
Applications are assessed by a selection committee made up of artists, curators, academics and buyers.

Applicants must submit:

▪ a representative portfolio of work produced in the past five years of at least 10 works and no more than 20, preferably by email. Images should not be larger than 300kb and each email no larger than 2MB.
▪ a substantial curriculum vitae with full names, references, addresses and contact numbers
▪ a brief letter of motivation, not more than one A4 page long, outlining reasons for wishing to join the programme and why specifically you wish to come to the Bag Factory
▪ If you have attended any other workshops or residencies of the Triangle Arts Network such as Greatmore, Thupelo, Thapong, Kuona, or Batapata, please specify where and when.
